A New Home For Vietnamese Stories In Victoria
Australia’s first museum dedicated to the Vietnamese community is officially open to the public.
Premier of Victoria Ben Carroll joined the community for the official opening of the Vietnamese Museum Australia, acknowledging the significant contributions of the more than 121,000 people of Vietnamese heritage who call Victoria home.
The Carroll Labor Government has proudly contributed nearly $10 million since 2016 to support construction and fit-out of the project, along with Commonwealth and community funding.
The museum features a permanent exhibition exploring the history that led to the displacement of many Vietnamese refugees in 1975.
It also charts their journeys of hope and settlement in Australia, to their achievements and contributions in present day Victoria.
These stories will come to life through objects, images and testimonials from Vietnamese refugees, as well as community leaders and high-profile Vietnamese Victorians.
The museum will become a hub where Victorians can meet and celebrate Vietnamese heritage and stories through a dedicated education resource centre, function space and café.
The opening of the museum coincides with the unveiling of Brimbank City Council’s Wominjeka plaza, a public space honouring Traditional Owners and celebrating all refugee and multicultural communities.
“We’re proud to be the state that delivered the first ever Vietnamese cultural centre and museum in Australia, as Victoria is home to one of the largest Vietnamese communities in Australia.”
