Western Health Volunteer Honoured For Dementia Care

Western Health volunteer Milan Gluhak has received an Outstanding Achievement Award for his work
supporting dementia patients at Sunshine Hospital.

Announced during National Volunteer Week, the 2015 Minister for Health Volunteer Awards recognise the
dedication and commitment of volunteers at Victoria’s health services.

From providing advice and support on telephone information helplines, to promoting awareness and
advocating for better care and services, to spending time with patients at the bedside, volunteers are vital to
the health and wellbeing of the community.

The Awards, now in their seventh year, also recognise people who have spent a lifetime volunteering, as well
as young volunteers who are already impressing with their commitment to helping others.

Milan offers his time as a Therapy Garden Volunteer in the secure GEM unit at Sunshine Hospital. The garden
has been developed specifically for people with dementia.

Being a passionate gardener, Milan understands the connection between gardening and well being, and was
one of the first volunteers to start in this program.

Milan volunteers up to 24 hours per month and also attends monthly gardener meetings where he gives
feedback on improving and enhancing the patient’s experience within the gardens.

Milan speaks three languages and uses this skill to interact with the patients in the garden. He will often
research and plant specific vegetables or herbs relevant to a patient’s cultural background to help assist with
that patient’s therapy.

The 2015 Minister for Health Volunteer Awards received 94 entries from 57 organisations including hospitals,
ambulance services, community health, mental health and aged care services.
