Free Dental Vans and Healthy Smiles For Our Kids

Students right across the state will have a brighter smile, thanks to our rollout of free dental care at all public Primary and Secondary schools.

The 2019/20 Victorian Budget begins that rollout, with an initial investment of $322 million – delivering on our promise to bring back dental vans.

Oral health teams will visit all government schools once per year to conduct dental check-ups of all students.

Children who require follow-up treatment will be offered it free of charge in a school dental van that will visit the school. For procedures that cannot be done in a school dental van – such as major dental surgery – students will be offered a referral to a public dental service where they can receive their treatment free of charge.

This investment will save families around $400 a year per child, as well as the stress of taking time off work for appointments.

Dental conditions are the highest cause of preventable hospitalisations for Victorian children under 10 years old.

Once fully rolled out, this initiative will also free up more than 100,000 places in the public dental care system each year.
